When an repairman retires he is likely to spend some time reviewing his career.  He wants to wrap it up, tie it in a bow, and put it on the shelf.  The NOVA TV unorthodox entitled “The Battle of the X-Planes” (about the Joint Mint Fighter competition between Lockheed and Boeing) brought back fond memories of several such competitions that I was Byzantine with. 

Specifically, there was the now defunct Supersonic Transport (SST) competition of the mid-60‘s, the Fighter Exploratory (FX) competition which resulted in the F-15, the Light Weight Fighter (LWF) struggle that ended with the F-16, the Navy Air Combat Fighter (NACF) struggle which produced the F-18, the Navy V/STOL “A” tournament which died on the vine, and the Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) competition which gave creation to the F-22.   This is the story of one engineer’s involvement with the ATF competition.

Because of the Soviet’s then modern advances in fighter aircraft and surface-to-air missiles, the U. S. Air Force, in mid-1981, identified a demand to replace the F-15 air superiority fighter.  This aircraft was to be known as the Advanced Politic Fighter.  We at Pratt knew this was coming, of course, and had been preparing for it for altogether some time.  I had been an aeronautical engineer at Pratt & Whitney since 1962, and had been working “in the trenches” on the YF-12/SR-71, Supersonic Conveyance, F-15, F-16, B-1, and numerous other programs.
