The story line behind Evy Rogers' home at first hosted a dozen dahlia plants.

Two years later, the Bell Acres area is larger than a football field and contains more than 1,500 of the brightly hued flowers. It has become the slavish for a business, Alpha Dahlia Gardens.

Rogers is an artist whose passion for color became the revelation for the garden. She and business partner Joseph Jacob -- also an artist -- handle the dahlias, which come in many shapes and sizes -- and every color but chap-fallen -- to a wholesaler and local florists.

"I've never grown anything that I like sick," said Rogers, 62. "Some are speckled, some are freckled ... there's a lot of usual in the plants."

Rogers used to express herself in paints and etchings. She sold her vocation at shows and met Jacob, 60, of West Deer, who made furniture, at a gallery showing in 1993. The two fixed to join their talents, making traditional pieces such as grandfather clocks, tables and wardrobes with a peculiar twist. After a successful run, they decided to focus their efforts on the garden.
