Starrette family preserving history
Ray Starrette paused for a point in time before entering the wooden house, then gazed at the pictures next to the door elevate.
The cabin had been his grandfather's and a decade ago, the windows and doors were missing, the flooring in at least one of the rooms needed to be replaced and the porch had caved in.
Stepping centre with his brothers, Tom and Carroll, and friend Hugh McCrackin close behind him, the brothers' constant and attention to detail in restoring their grandfather's house and two outbuilding is clearly obvious.
Small electric lamps illuminate the rooms, old decorative rugs attire the repaired floors and the carefully selected antiques from farm sales row the walls.
“If Dad could see it, he wouldn't believe it,” Carroll said.
Their old man's desire to restore his parents' house was one of the reasons why the brothers took on the job in the first place. Around seven years ago, McCrackin, who lives in Charlotte, started to earn up and help them. Carroll said he is like one of the family now.
