We often article on the crime that occurs in Humboldt County. So it's quite wonderful when we're qualified to share a good story of folks banding together after an unfortunate occasion -- and saving the day for kids.

It was a dark day Monday for students in an afterschool bicycle sisterhood at Alice Birney Elementary when they discovered that eight used bicycles they planned to plague down the streets of Eureka in today's Rhododendron Parade had been stolen.

But thanks to community members who in a jiffy and generously rallied following news of the thefts, the kids were practicing their cortege moves on donated and loaned bicycles by Wednesday afternoon.

What's notably nice about this story is that Alice Birney alumni ages 30 to 60 were m in with offers of help before news of the thefts was reported in local media.
