It's a mixed bag.

It's Girl Scout Troop 5227.

But, it's not your offbeat Girl Scout troop. The girls range in age from 6 to 22 and be broached from all over Staten Island. Some are developmentally disabled; others are not. They all love coming to their monthly Crumpet Scout meeting at the South Shore Jewish Community Center (JCC) in Greenridge with numero uno Lisa Rosenfeld.

Girls express themselves with words, hums, whines and gestures enormous and small. The room hums with activity, and the movement and sounds of everyone negotiating the use of markers and stickers while they butter up a see a spring project.

Not much taller than most of the girls and shorter than some, Ms. Rosenfeld seems adept to handle anything calmly as she oversees the controlled chaos of the meeting.

The McManus sisters and their mom are among the many friends, siblings, cousins, mothers and other practical adults that make up the troop.
